Скажите, есть ли способ процесс архивирования сплавлять в бэкграунд? А то жутко неудобно - запустил процесс архивирования из мультиарка, и всё, тотал висит до его окончания. Даже прогресс не отображает.

Если мультиарк - то вряд ли. Если внешние упаковщики - то можно. Там на диалоге будет кнопочка "В фоне".
