Собственно, реально заменить totalcmd на explore.exe, как бы это сделать?

Можно!.
Реально не хватает трэя и таскбара.
Одно время нормально работал с шеллом тотала, и Object Bar в качестве трэя и таскбара. Хотелось бы просто чего то поменее требовательного и поболее функционального
